HISTORY OF BEDROLLS
A Bedroll's Tale: From Caveman to Cowboy
A bedroll, a simple yet essential piece of gear, has accompanied humans on their journeys for millennia. From the nomadic tribes of the ancient world to modern-day adventurers, bedrolls have provided a portable haven of comfort and warmth.
The earliest bedrolls were likely little more than animal skins or bundles of grass, offering meager protection from the elements. As civilizations developed and textiles became more sophisticated, bedrolls evolved into more elaborate structures. The Romans, for example, were known for their saccus, a type of sleeping bag filled with feathers or wool.
During the Middle Ages, knights and soldiers carried bedrolls on their campaigns, often adorned with heraldry or family crests. These portable beds were a symbol of status and comfort, a stark contrast to the harsh realities of life on the battlefield.
The American frontier, with its vast, untamed wilderness, saw the bedroll become an indispensable tool for pioneers and explorers. The iconic cowboy bedroll, typically made of canvas and filled with a wool blanket, was a testament to the rugged individualism of the West.
Today, bedrolls continue to be a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts, from campers and hunters to backpackers and overlanders. While the materials and designs have evolved, the basic concept remains the same: a portable, comfortable sleeping solution.
One company that has been at the forefront of bedroll manufacturing for over 50 years is Beckel Canvas in Portland, Oregon.
