This is awesome for canoe and hunting trips a cot against the back wall fire in front and you are set if it’s a little buggy bring a mosquito net but for cool weather it’s great the fire in front is unreal if you like comfort and being open this is the one you want mine is the light green lots of tie outs and well made I generally use a rope in front swing in the sides midway unless it’s rainy then I button up but the front porch is the key thrown back a lot of heat rolls out pushed out front it rolls in but back out tucked down it keeps it toasty hadn’t used it in a lot of wind in winter but a couple rain storms we pulled the canoe in front pulled the flaps in and down in front and were plenty dry with room to spare.

I really like my Whelen lean. I ordered the light green version. It is very well made and easy to set up. I normally transport using a canoe and this lean to packs down pretty compact and is not a burden to pack for short distances. It’s design features help protect yet give you open access to your environment. It’s very different from sheltering in a totally enclosed tent but is a pleasure to use. I have spent the night under it down to the upper thirties in temperature so far with no problems. I love “canvas camping” in mine.

I spent a long time researching these tarps. I made the decision to go with Beckel, and couldn’t be happier with my decision. Wonderful service, the Whelen is a 110% quality piece of gear and the price can’t be beaten. If you’re thinking of getting a Whelen Lean-to, get a Beckel.

  4. Michael Shaudus

The Beckel canvas Whelen lean-to is a very well made, surprisingly lightweight, and very comfortable shelter for both old-style and contemporary camping. My first night using it was under a torrential downpour, and the Whelen kept me nice and dry, even without lowering the awning or wings for extra coverage. I have never had a more comfortable camping experience than I have using the Beckel canvas Whelen lean to. If you are on the fence about trying a Whelen, don’t be. Buy this one – you won’t be disappointed.
